रावणस्य अन्त्येष्टिः — Ravana’s Funeral Rites and the Ethics of Post-War Conduct
ऋषयश्चमहान्तोऽपिगन्धर्वाश्चयशस्विनः ।ननुनामतवोद्वेगाच्चारणाश्चदिशोगताः ।।।।
ṛṣayaś ca mahānto 'pi gandharvāś ca yaśasvinaḥ |
nanu nāma tavodvegāc cāraṇāś ca diśo gatāḥ ||
It is well known that, out of fear of you, even great seers, illustrious Gandharvas, and the Cāraṇas fled away in every direction.
"For fear of you, even great seers, illustrious Gandharvas, Charanas also went in all directions, is well known."
Mere power that generates fear is not dharma; true greatness protects the righteous rather than terrifying them.
In mourning, Mandodarī recalls Rāvaṇa’s former terror-inducing might, contrasting it with his present downfall.
Discernment (viveka): distinguishing fame born of fear from honor grounded in dharma.
