Shloka 5.62.12
मधुवनभङ्गः — The Disruption of Madhuvana and Dadhimukha’s Complaint
उन्मत्तभूताः प्लवगा मधुमत्ताश्च हृष्टवत्।क्षिपन्ति च तथान्योन्यं स्खलन्ति च तथाऽपरे।।5.62.12।।
unmattabhūtāḥ plavagā madhumattāś ca hṛṣṭavat |
kṣipanti ca tathānyonyaṃ skhalanti ca tathāpare ||5.62.12||
Drunk with honey, the leaping vānaras, exultant as if mad, shoved one another, while others reeled and stumbled.
Intoxicated with drink, some behaved like mad people, some pushed others senselessly and some were unsteady and shaky.
Self-mastery protects community: intoxication leads to aggression and instability, harming harmony and inviting rightful correction.
The honey celebration escalates into chaotic behavior—pushing and stumbling—foreshadowing confrontation with the grove’s guardian.
Implicitly, kṣamā and saṃyama (patience and restraint) are presented as necessary counter-virtues to reckless exhilaration.
