लङ्कादाहानन्तरचिन्ता — Hanuman’s Post-Conflagration Self-Examination and Assurance of Sita’s Safety
तस्याभूत्सुमहांस्त्रासः कुत्सा चात्मन्यजायत।लङ्कां प्रदहता कर्म किंस्वित्कृतमिदं मया।।।।
ikṣvāku-vaṁśe dharmiṣṭhe gate nāśam asaṁśayam | bhaviṣyanti prajāḥ sarvāḥ śoka-santāpa-pīḍitāḥ ||
When the supremely righteous Ikṣvāku lineage comes to ruin—without doubt—all the people will be afflicted by grief and burning anguish.
Overtaken by great fear, Hanuman felt a sense of self-reproach seeing Lanka reduced to ashes, and said, ' Lanka is burnt. What a heinous action has been perpetrated by me'.
The kingly dharma is inseparable from public welfare: the fall of a righteous royal line destabilizes society and causes widespread suffering.
Hanumān imagines the societal consequences if Rāma’s line is extinguished due to the mission failing and tragedy befalling the royal family.
