Shloka 5.11.3

रावणान्तःपुर-पानभूमि-विचयः (Hanumān’s Survey of Rāvaṇa’s Inner Palace and Banquet Hall)

न रामेण वियुक्ता सा स्वप्तुमर्हति भामिनी।न भोक्तुं वाप्यलङ्कर्तुं न पानमुपसेवितुम्।।5.11.2।।नान्यं नरमुपस्थातुं सुराणामपि चेश्वरम्।न हि रामसमः कश्चिद्विद्यते त्रिदशेष्वपि।।5.11.3।।अन्येयमिति निश्चित्य पानभूमौ चचार सः।

na rāmeṇa viyuktā sā svaptum arhati bhāminī |

na bhoktuṃ vāpy alaṅkartuṃ na pānam upasevitum || 5.11.2 ||

na anyaṃ naram upasthātuṃ surāṇām api ceśvaram |

na hi rāmasamaḥ kaścid vidyate tridaśeṣv api || 5.11.3 ||

anye iyam iti niścitya pānabhūmau cacāra saḥ |

“That lovely lady, separated from Rāma, would not be fit to sleep—nor to eat, adorn herself, or take to drink. Nor would she approach any other man, even the lord of the gods; for none exists equal to Rāma, not even among the celestials.” Having thus concluded, he continued to move about in the banquet-hall, deciding: “This is some other woman, not Sītā.”

'Lovely Sita, being away from Rama, will not sleep, will not eat or drink or adorn herself. How can she approach any other man even if he is the king of gods for there is none equal to Rama even among gods'. Having thus decided, Hanuman strolled about the banquet hall.

Dharma is expressed as unwavering fidelity (Sītā’s pativratā-dharma) and truthful discernment: Hanumān refuses to misidentify anyone as Sītā, grounding his judgment in her known virtue and in Rāma’s unique worth.

After seeing women in the palace, Hanumān reasons that Sītā—separated from Rāma—would not be indulging in sleep, adornment, or drink, and concludes the women he sees are not Sītā, then continues searching.

Hanumān’s viveka (discriminating judgment) and commitment to satya—he relies on ethical knowledge of Sītā and Rāma rather than appearances.
