Shloka 5.1.186

समुद्रलङ्घनारम्भः — Commencement of the Ocean-Crossing

तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधश्चैव वीक्षमाणस्ततः कपिः।ददर्श स महत्सत्त्वमुत्थितं लवणाम्भसि।।।।

tiryag ūrdhvam adhaś caiva vīkṣamāṇas tataḥ kapiḥ |

dadarśa sa mahatsattvam utthitaṃ lavaṇāmbhasi ||

Then the monkey, looking sideways, upward, and downward, saw a colossal being rising up from the salt sea.

Looking around, right and left, up and down, the monkey saw a huge being rise from the salty sea.

Dharma in action requires vigilance: one must survey circumstances fully (up, down, and around) to protect a righteous mission.

Hanuman searches for the cause of his sudden restraint and notices a massive creature emerging from the sea beneath him.

Apramāda (watchfulness): careful observation in the face of hidden danger.
