वालि–मायावी–बिलप्रवेशः (Vali’s Pursuit of Mayavi and the Cave Episode)
वाली नाम मम भ्राता ज्येष्ठश्शत्रुनिषूदनः।पितुर्बहुमतो नित्यं ममापि च तथा पुरा4.9.1।।
vālī nāma mama bhrātā jyeṣṭhaḥ śatruniṣūdanaḥ | pitur bahumato nityaṃ mamāpi ca tathā purā ||
My elder brother, named Vālī—an annihilator of enemies—was always held in high esteem by our father, and formerly by me as well.
'My elder brother called Vali, capable of exterminating enemies was always highly regarded by my father and me.
Dharma here touches on respect for elders and recognized merit; it also sets up how dharmic order can be strained when family bonds later break.
Sugrīva begins recounting to Rāma Vālī’s stature in the family to frame the later tragedy of their rupture.
Vālī’s vīrya (prowess) and the family’s earlier regard for him—showing how esteem is earned and socially affirmed.
