मैत्रीप्रतिज्ञा-वैरकारणप्रश्नः (Friendship Vow and Inquiry into the Cause of Enmity)
एष मे राम शोकान्तश्शोकार्तेन निवेदितः।दुःखितस्सुखितो वापि सख्युर्नित्यं सखा गतिः।।
tad-vināśād dhi me duḥkhaṁ praṇaṣṭaṁ syād anantaram |
sukhaṁ me jīvitaṁ caiva tad-vināśa-nibandhanam ||
Only with his destruction will my sorrow vanish at once; my happiness—and even my life—depend upon that very destruction.
'This what I had to tell you out of sorrow. This is how my sorrow will end. In joy and in sorrow your friend is your refuge.
The verse frames relief from oppression as a moral necessity: ending unjust harm restores rightful order, and truthfully acknowledging one’s suffering becomes the basis for seeking dharmic redress.
Sugrīva tells Rāma that his grief and insecurity will end only when Vāli is eliminated, revealing the urgency behind his plea for help.
