पञ्चषष्टितमः सर्गः — वानराणां प्लवन-पराक्रम-निरूपणम् (Assessment of the Vanaras’ Leaping Capacity; Jambavan Motivates Hanuman)
पूर्वमस्माकमप्यासीत्कश्चिद्गतिपराक्रमः।ते वयं वयसः पारमनुप्राप्तास्स्म साम्प्रतम्।।।।
pūrvam asmākam apy āsīt kaścid gati-parākramaḥ |
te vayaṃ vayasaḥ pāram anuprāptāḥ sma sāmpratam ||
“In earlier days, I too had a measure of heroic power of movement; but now I have reached the far end of age.”
'Earlier I was also very courageous, but now I have become old and reached the fag end of life.
Satya (truth) as dharma: Jāmbavān speaks honestly about his limitations instead of claiming ability he no longer has.
Jāmbavān begins his response by acknowledging that age has reduced his former leaping prowess.
Humility and honesty: he does not compete in boasting, but states his condition plainly.
