सूर्यानुगमनवृत्तान्तः — The Account of Following the Sun
कैलासशिखरे बद्ध्वा मुनीनामग्रतः पणम्।रविस्स्यादनुयातव्यो यावदस्तं महागिरिम्।।।।
kailāsaśikhare baddhvā munīnām agrataḥ paṇam |
raviḥ syād anuyātavyo yāvad astaṃ mahāgirim ||
On the summit of Mount Kailāsa, in the presence of the sages, we made a wager: that the Sun was to be followed until his setting upon the great western mountain.
'Both of us made a bet on the peak of mount Kailasa in the presence of sages to follow the Sun-god until he sets on the western mountain.
Dharma here is expressed as steadfastness to a pledged undertaking—accepting a vow publicly (before sages) and committing to fulfill it.
Sampāti recounts an earlier episode with his younger brother Jaṭāyu: they made a wager to follow the Sun’s course up to sunset.
Resolve and competitiveness disciplined by witness and accountability—undertaking a challenge under the moral scrutiny of sages.
