Shloka 4.61.11

सूर्यानुगमनवृत्तान्तः — The Account of Following the Sun

न दिग्विज्ञायते याम्या नाग्नेयी न च वारुणी।युगान्ते नियतो लोको हतो दग्ध इवाग्निना।।।।

ahaṃ caiva jaṭāyuś ca saṅgharṣād dharpamohitau | ākāśaṃ patitau vīrau jijñāsantau parākramam ||

Jatāyu and I—both heroes—were deluded by pride; challenging one another, we rose into the sky, seeking to test and know each other’s prowess.

'I did not know which the southern direction was or the southeast or the west. It looked as if the world had been consumed by fire and dissolved, as if it was the end of the yuga.

Dharma warns against darpa (pride): rivalry undertaken for ego rather than duty leads to harm and loss of right judgment.

Sampāti begins narrating how he and Jatāyu competed in flight to measure their strength.

A negative example is emphasized: lack of self-restraint (dama) due to pride.
