Shloka 4.31.39

लक्ष्मणक्रोधः सुग्रीवप्रबोधनं च (Lakshmana’s Wrath and the Summoning of Sugriva)

ततः किलकिलां चक्रुर्लक्ष्मणं प्रेक्ष्य वानराः।प्रसादयन्तस्तं क्रुद्धं भयमोहितचेतसः।।

tataḥ kilakilāṃ cakrur lakṣmaṇaṃ prekṣya vānarāḥ | prasādayantas taṃ kruddhaṃ bhayamohitacetasaḥ ||

Then, seeing Lakshmana enraged, the Vanaras—hearts dazed with fear—raised a clamorous noise, trying to appease him.

Looking at angry Lakshmana, and scared at heart, the monkeys started making a noise in order to please him.

L
Lakshmana
V
Vanaras (monkey hosts/attendants)

Dharma favors sincere conciliation and timely respect toward the righteous; fear-driven appeasement is unstable, but it signals recognition of moral authority.

The Vanara attendants, alarmed by Lakshmana’s anger, attempt to pacify him with loud cries and gestures.

Collective prudence—attempting to prevent escalation—though mixed with fear rather than principled courage.
