Shloka 4.24.19
वालिवधोत्तरशोकः — Sugriva’s Remorse and Tara’s Lament after Vali’s Death
महाबलानां हरियूथपानामिदं कुलं राघव मन्निमित्तम्।अस्याङ्गदप्यापि च शोकतापादर्धस्थितप्राणमितीव मन्ये।।।।
aṃho batedaṃ nṛvara aviṣahyaṃ nivartate me hṛdi sādhuvṛttam |
vivarṇam agnau paritapyamānaṃ kiṭṭaṃ yathā rāghava jātarūpam ||
Alas, O best of men—this anguish is unbearable: the good conduct in my heart recedes, as dross drives back the bright gold when it is heated in fire, O Rāghava.
'O Rama! this race of mighty monkey chiefs is as though reduced to a half-dead state because of my action and the grief of Angada.
Dharma is a cultivated inner state; when one commits adharma, the mind’s virtuous disposition is obscured, like gold clouded by impurity under heat.
Sugrīva describes how unbearable remorse has displaced his former good sense and stability.
Self-reflection—he observes the moral deterioration within himself rather than blaming others.
