Shloka 1.48.23
अहल्याशापवर्णनम् (The Account of Ahalyā’s Curse and the Deserted Hermitage near Mithilā)
एवं सङ्गम्य तु तया निश्चक्रामोटजात्तत:।।स सम्भ्रमात्त्वरन् राम शङ्कितो गौतमं प्रति।।।
evaṃ saṅgamya tu tayā niścakrāmoṭajāt tataḥ |
sa sambhramāt tvaran rāma śaṅkito gautamaṃ prati ||
Thus, having been with her, he hurried out from the leaf-hut; and in alarm, O Rāma, he hastened away, anxious about Gautama.
O Rama! he (Indra) came out of the leaf-hut quickly after his union with her, apprehensive of Gautama.
Adharma produces fear and haste: when one violates righteousness, one lives in apprehension, unlike the steadiness that comes from satya and self-control.
Indra exits the hut quickly after the affair, worried that Gautama may return and discover the deception.
By contrast, the virtue implied is dharmic fearlessness—security that arises from truthful conduct—shown here by its absence.
