ताटकावृत्तान्तः — The Account of Tāṭakā and the Royal Duty to Protect
विश्वामित्रोऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं शृण येन बलोत्तरा।वरदानकृतं वीर्यं धारयत्यबला बलम्।।।।
pūrvam āsīn mahāyakṣaḥ suketur nāma vīryavān | anapatyaḥ śubhācāraḥ sa ca tepe mahat tapaḥ ||
In former times there lived a mighty Yakṣa named Suketu—powerful and of virtuous conduct, yet without children—and he undertook great austerities.
Viswamitra said, "Listen, how she acquired the prowess and strength by virtue of a boon she received.
Tapas (disciplined austerity) is portrayed as a legitimate means to pursue life aims; it also foreshadows how power can arise and must later be governed by dharma.
Viśvāmitra starts Tātakā’s lineage/history by introducing Suketu, a childless Yakṣa who performs great penance.
