श्रीमद्रामायणकथासङ्क्षेपः / The Ramayana in Synopsis (Narada’s Summary to Valmiki)
तेन तत्रैव वसता जनस्थाननिवासिनी ।विरूपिता शूर्पणखा राक्षसी कामरूपिणी ।।।।
tena tatraiva vasatā janasthānanivāsinī | virūpitā śūrpaṇakhā rākṣasī kāmarūpiṇī || 1.1.46 ||
While he was dwelling there, Śūrpaṇakhā—the shape-shifting rākṣasī who lived in Jana-sthāna—was disfigured as a consequence of her aggression.
During his stay there a demon called Surpanakha living in Janasthana (resting place for the army of Ravana in Dandakaranya) and capable of assuming any form at will was rendered deformed by Lakshmana.
Adharma—aggression and violation of boundaries—brings immediate consequences; dharma includes restraining harm and protecting rightful household life.
Nārada signals the trigger event in the forest: Śūrpaṇakhā’s encounter with Rāma’s party leading to her disfigurement.
Guarding propriety and safety—responding to threat so that dharmic life (āśrama/household order) is not violated.
