और्ध्वदैहिकक्रिया-शोकविलापः (Obsequies for Daśaratha and the Brothers’ Lament)
अवदारणकाले तु पृथिवी नावदीर्यते।।।।या विहीना त्वया राज्ञा धर्मज्ञेन महात्मना।
brāhmaṇebhyo dadau ratnaṃ dhanam annaṃ ca puṣkalam | vāsāṃsi ca mahārhāṇi ratnāni vividhāni ca ||
During the śrāddha rites, Bharata bestowed upon the brahmins precious stones, wealth, abundant grain and food, garments of great worth, and gems of many kinds.
You are a righteous and mighty king and without you, this earth would have been broken into pieces. But it does not.
Dharma here is expressed as śrāddha and dāna—honoring the departed through prescribed rites and supporting brahmins with generous gifts.
After Daśaratha’s death, Bharata performs the obsequial ceremonies and distributes ritual gifts as part of the funerary observances.
Bharata’s dutifulness and generosity—he fulfills ancestral obligations despite personal grief.
