tasmin sambhriyamāṇe tu rāghavasyābhiṣecane | kaikeyī nāma bhartāram āryā sā yācate varam || 3.47.6 ||
While preparations were being made for Rāghava’s consecration, the noble lady Kaikeyī asked her husband for a boon.
Arrangements for consecration were on when queen Kaikeyi sought a boon from the king.
It introduces the tension between satya (keeping promises) and dharma (righteous outcomes), a central moral problem in the epic.
During coronation preparations, Kaikeyī invokes a boon from the king, setting in motion the exile narrative.
Implicitly, the king’s commitment to truth (promise-keeping) is foregrounded as the coming ethical test.
