Virādha-saṃvādaḥ — Encounter with Virādha in the Daṇḍakāraṇya (Aranya Kanda, Sarga 2)
राज्यकामे मम क्रोधो भरते यो बभूव ह।तं विराधे प्रमोक्ष्यामि वज्री वज्रमिवाचले।।।।
rājyakāme mama krodho bharate yo babhūva ha | taṃ virādhe pramokṣyāmi vajrī vajram ivācale ||
Like Indra hurling his thunderbolt upon a mountain, I will now unleash on Virādha the anger that arose in me toward Bharata, who coveted the kingdom.
Like Indra who hits the mountain with his thunderbolt, I shall release on Viradha the anger I felt against Bharata for his passion for the kingdom.
The verse highlights the danger of anger (krodha) and the need to direct one’s force toward protection of dharma rather than personal grievance; Rāma frames his wrath as being discharged in a righteous battle context.
During the Virādha encounter in the forest, Rāma prepares to strike the rākṣasa and expresses that he will vent the anger previously stirred by Bharata’s perceived claim to the kingdom.
Rāma’s decisive valor and protective resolve—he is ready to act forcefully against an immediate adharmic threat.
