Virādha-saṃvādaḥ — Encounter with Virādha in the Daṇḍakāraṇya (Aranya Kanda, Sarga 2)
इयं नारी वरारोहा मम भार्या भविष्यति।युवयोः पापयोश्चाहं पास्यामि रुधिरं मृधे।।।।
iyaṃ nārī varārohā mama bhāryā bhaviṣyati | yuvayoḥ pāpayoś cāhaṃ pāsyāmi rudhiraṃ mṛdhe ||
This woman of lovely form will become my wife; and in battle I will drink the blood of you two sinners.
This woman of fine hips shall be my wife. You sinners! I shall drink the blood of both of you in the fight.
The verse spotlights adharma: violation of marital sanctity and violent intent. Dharma demands protection of the innocent and defense of marital fidelity.
Virādha declares his intention to take Sītā and to kill the brothers, escalating the confrontation into an immediate crisis.
Rāma’s protective duty (rakṣaṇa-dharma) is invoked by the threat against Sītā.
