Shloka 3.14.4

जटायुस्संवादः — Encounter with Jaṭāyu and the Genealogy of Beings (Aranyakanda 14)

स तं पितृसखं बुद्ध्वा पूजयामास राघवः।स तस्य कुलमव्यग्रमथ पप्रच्छ नाम च।।3.14.4।।

rāmasya vacanaṃ śrutvā sarvabhūtasamudbhavam |

ācacakṣe dvijas tasmai kulam ātmānam eva ca || 3.14.5 ||

Hearing Rāma’s words, spoken for the good of all beings, the bird began to tell him of the origin of creatures and, in particular, of his own lineage and identity.

Rama knew he was a friend of his father. So he enquired in a cool, composed voice his name and his lineage.

Satya (truthfulness) in self-presentation: the bird responds to Rāma’s respectful inquiry by giving an orderly and truthful account of lineage and identity.

After being honored by Rāma, Jatāyu begins explaining his background, starting with a broad account of origins and then his own family line.

Jatāyu’s openness and reliability: he answers without concealment, establishing trust and rightful alliance.
