Shloka 3.14.15
जटायुस्संवादः — Encounter with Jaṭāyu and the Genealogy of Beings (Aranyakanda 14)
दितिस्त्वजनयत्पुत्रान् दैत्यांस्तात यशस्विनः।।3.14.15।।तेषामियं वसुमती पुराऽसीत्सवनार्णवा।
ditis tv ajanayat putrān daityāṃs tāta yaśasvinaḥ | teṣām iyaṃ vasumatī purā 'sīt sa-vanārṇavā ||
But Diti, dear one, bore illustrious sons known as the Daityas; and in ancient times this earth—together with its forests and seas—belonged to them.
O dear Rama, Diti bore glorious sons called Daityas and this earth with all the forests and seas belonged to them.
The verse implicitly contrasts possession with righteousness: dominion over the earth can change hands across ages, suggesting that mere power is unstable unless rooted in dharma.
Jaṭāyu continues the lineage account, describing Diti’s offspring (Daityas) and their former sovereignty over the earth.
Historical awareness and discernment—understanding that worldly control is transient, while ethical order is the higher measure.
