Matsya Purana — Saubhagya-Śayana Vow: Lalitā/Gaurī–Śiva Worship
*मत्स्य उवाच वसन्तमासमासाद्य तृतीयायां जनप्रिय शुक्लपक्षस्य पूर्वाह्णे तिलैः स्नानं समाचरेत् //
*matsya uvāca vasantamāsamāsādya tṛtīyāyāṃ janapriya śuklapakṣasya pūrvāhṇe tilaiḥ snānaṃ samācaret //
Matsya said: “O beloved one, when the spring month arrives, on the third lunar day (tṛtīyā) of the bright fortnight, in the forenoon one should duly perform a bath using sesame (tilā).”
This verse does not discuss pralaya; it gives a practical dharma instruction about timing a purificatory bath during the spring month on a specific bright-fortnight tithi.
It frames a householder-style observance: following calendrical discipline (tithi, paksha, time of day) and performing purificatory rites (snāna) as part of daily/seasonal dharma; a king would also model and patronize such public religious discipline.
The ritual significance is “tila-snana”—a sesame-assisted bath performed in the forenoon on Shukla Tritiya in Vasanta, indicating precise ritual timing and the use of sesame as a purifier in Puranic practice.
