Matsya Purana — Śarkarā-Saptamī Vrata: The Sugar Offering Rite to Savitṛ
अनेन विधिना सर्वं मासि मासि समाचरेत् संवत्सरान्ते शयनं शर्कराकलशान्वितम् //
anena vidhinā sarvaṃ māsi māsi samācaret saṃvatsarānte śayanaṃ śarkarākalaśānvitam //
Following this procedure, one should duly perform everything month after month; and at the end of the year, one should make the ritual offering of a bed (śayana), accompanied by jars (kalaśa) filled with sugar.
This verse does not address pralaya; it focuses on disciplined, recurring religious observance and an annual concluding donation.
It emphasizes gṛhastha-dharma: consistent monthly practice of prescribed rites and a year-end charitable gift (śayana-dāna), reflecting steadiness, generosity, and ritual accountability.
The ritual significance is dāna: gifting a bed (śayana) at year’s end, specifically accompanied by sugar-filled kalaśas—an itemized prescription typical of Purāṇic vrata manuals.
