Matsya Purana — Paurava Genealogy: Bharata
*ऋषय ऊचुः उग्रायुधः कस्य सुतः कस्य वंशे स कथ्यते किमर्थं तेन ते नीपाः सर्वे चैव प्रणाशिताः //
*ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ugrāyudhaḥ kasya sutaḥ kasya vaṃśe sa kathyate kimarthaṃ tena te nīpāḥ sarve caiva praṇāśitāḥ //
The sages said: “Ugrāyudha—whose son was he, and in which lineage is he spoken of? And for what reason were all those Nīpa kings destroyed by him?”
This verse does not address Pralaya; it is a genealogical inquiry focused on identifying Ugrāyudha’s lineage and the cause of the Nīpas’ destruction.
Indirectly, it frames a moral-historical investigation: the sages seek the cause behind a dynasty’s downfall, a typical Purāṇic way of highlighting how royal conduct, conflict, or adharma can lead to the ruin of a lineage.
No Vāstu, temple-building, or ritual procedure is mentioned in this verse; it functions as a narrative question introducing a royal-history episode.
