Matsya Purana — Lineage of the Pitṛs
*सूत उवाच दक्षस्य यज्ञे वितते प्रभूतवरदक्षिणे समाहूतेषु देवेषु प्रोवाच पितरं सती //
*sūta uvāca dakṣasya yajñe vitate prabhūtavaradakṣiṇe samāhūteṣu deveṣu provāca pitaraṃ satī //
Sūta said: When Dakṣa’s sacrifice (yajña) had been set in motion—abounding in excellent gifts and sacrificial fees (dakṣiṇā)—and the gods had been invited and assembled, Satī addressed her father.
This verse does not discuss pralaya; it situates a ritual-historical episode—Dakṣa’s yajña—highlighting the formal assembly of gods and the narrative trigger for Satī’s confrontation.
Indirectly, it reflects dharmic norms for householders and patrons of sacrifice: properly organizing a yajña, inviting qualified participants, and providing appropriate dakṣiṇā—key duties in Purāṇic ritual ethics.
Ritually, it emphasizes correct yajña procedure: the sacrifice is ‘fully arranged/commenced,’ the devas are formally invited, and abundant dakṣiṇā is provided—markers of a properly executed Vedic-Purāṇic sacrificial rite.
