Vaiśaṃpāyana said: In strength and in beauty he was a great bull among men. By his extraordinary appearance he seemed like a god. Yet his splendor was concealed by his disguise—like the sun veiled by vast masses of clouds, or fire hidden beneath ashes—while his inner power remained fully intact.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse teaches that genuine excellence—strength, beauty, and moral stature—can remain real even when outwardly concealed. Like the sun behind clouds or fire under ash, inner virtue and capability persist without needing public display; restraint and humility can protect dharma in difficult circumstances.
Vaiśaṃpāyana is describing the hero’s extraordinary presence and power during the Virāṭa episode, emphasizing that although he is living in disguise, his innate radiance and valor are only covered externally, not diminished.
