Bhīṣma–Arjuna Encounter Framed Cosmically

Bhīṣma said: “The Brahmāstra and the Vedas—these are not seen elsewhere apart from our teachers’ lineage. O son of the preceptor, be patient; this is not the time to create divisions among ourselves. Let all of us unite and fight Arjuna who has come here.”
Bhīṣma urges restraint and unity: internal quarrels and factionalism (vibheda) weaken a cause, especially in crisis. Ethical leadership here means prioritizing collective duty and strategic cohesion over personal grievance.
In the Virāṭa episode’s battlefield context, Bhīṣma addresses the preceptor’s son (Aśvatthāman), asking him to be patient and not sow division. He emphasizes the rare, authoritative heritage of sacred knowledge and weapon-lore (Vedas and Brahmāstra) in their teacher-line, and calls everyone to unite to face Arjuna.
