Virāṭa-parva Adhyāya 21 — Kīcaka’s clandestine approach and Bhīma’s covert intervention (नर्तनागारे कीचकवध-प्रसङ्गः)
द्युमत्सेनसुतं वीर॑ सत्यवन्तमनिन्दिता । सावित्र्यनुचचारैका यमलोकं॑ मनस्विनी,सती-साध्वी मनस्विनी सावित्री द्युमत्सेनके पुत्र वीरवर सत्यवान्के मर जानेपर उनके पीछे-पीछे अकेली ही यमलोककी ओर गयी थी
dyumatsenasutaṁ vīra satyavantam aninditā | sāvitrī anucacāraikā yamalokaṁ manasvinī ||
Bhīmasena said: “The blameless, resolute Sāvitrī—when the heroic Satyavān, son of Dyumatsena, had died—followed him all alone, even toward Yama’s realm.”
भीमसेन उवाच
The verse highlights steadfast dharma and courageous fidelity: Sāvitrī’s blameless resolve does not collapse before death itself; she follows the path of righteousness with unwavering mind, showing that moral strength and devotion can confront even Yama’s domain.
Bhīma recalls the well-known story of Sāvitrī: after Satyavān dies, she does not remain behind in grief but follows him alone toward Yama’s realm, setting up the episode where her resolve and virtue become central to what follows.
