“Those who are ever-giving yet never beg, who are devoted to the brāhmaṇas and steadfast in truth—of such a man, his dignified wife, me, has been struck with a kick by the son of a charioteer.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse contrasts dharmic virtues—generosity without begging, devotion to brāhmaṇas, and truthfulness—with the adharma of humiliating such people through violence and disrespect, especially toward a dignified wife. It frames the act as a grave ethical transgression.
A speaker reports an outrage: a person labeled ‘sūtaputra’ has kicked the speaker, who identifies herself as the honored wife of a man characterized by generosity, truthfulness, and reverence for brāhmaṇas. The line functions as a complaint meant to highlight injustice and provoke a response.
