Brahmaṇānāṃ Yācanā—Tīrtha-yātrā-prastāvaḥ

The Brahmanas’ Petition and the Proposal of Pilgrimage

vaiśampāyana uvāca | evaṁ sambhāṣamāṇe tu dhaumye kauravanandana | lomaśaḥ sa mahātejā ṛṣis tatrājagāma ha ||

Vaiśampāyana said: O delight of the Kurus, while the sage Dhaumya was speaking thus, the great and radiant Ṛṣi Lomaśa arrived there. As the gods rise when Indra enters heaven, so Yudhiṣṭhira—the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas—together with his companions and the assembled brāhmaṇas, rose to honor the illustrious Lomaśa.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharma expressed as respectful reception of spiritual elders: when a sage arrives, even kings and assemblies rise to honor him, acknowledging that moral and spiritual counsel outranks status and comfort.

As Dhaumya is speaking, the sage Lomaśa arrives at the Pāṇḍavas’ location in the forest; Yudhiṣṭhira, his companions, and the brāhmaṇas stand up to welcome him, likened to the gods rising when Indra appears in heaven.
