नलस्य बाहुकत्वेन ऋतुपर्णनगरप्रवेशः
Nala as Bāhuka enters Ṛtuparṇa’s city
तामुवाचानवद्याज़ीं सार्थस्य महतः प्रभु: । सार्थवाह: शुचिर्नाम शृणु कल्याणि मद्गच:,उस महान् समूहका मालिक और समस्त यात्रीदलका संचालक (वणिक्) शुचिनामसे प्रसिद्ध था। उसने उस सुन्दरीसे कहा--“कल्याणि! मेरी बात सुनो'--
tām uvāca anavadyāṅgīṃ sārthasya mahataḥ prabhuḥ | sārthavāhaḥ śucir nāma śṛṇu kalyāṇi madgiraḥ ||
Then the leader of that great caravan, a merchant named Śuci—pure in conduct—addressed the blameless-limbed maiden: “O auspicious one, listen to my words.”
बृहृदश्च उवाच
The verse models courteous, dharmic speech: a leader addresses a woman respectfully (“kalyāṇi”) and invites attentive listening, implying responsibility and ethical restraint in social interactions, especially where power or protection is involved.
Within Bṛhadaśva’s narration, the chief of a large caravan—Śuci—approaches a blameless maiden and begins speaking to her, setting up the next events by asking her to hear his words.
