Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Sañjaya on Arjuna’s Indraloka report and the political consequences

In that delightful abode, Indra, king of the gods, held a great festival to mark your auspicious arrival—the greatest celebration in heaven. There Rudra, the Ādityas, the Aśvin twins, and the hosts of the Vasus gathered from every quarter. O best of men, companies of great ṛṣis, foremost royal sages, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, Yakṣas, and mighty Nāgas sat upon seats befitting their rank, honor, and power. Their bodies shone like fire, moon, and sun, and all the gods blazed with wondrous splendor. O wide-eyed son of Indra, then the Gandharvas played many vīṇās; divine, enchanting music arose; and the chief Apsarases danced. O Pārtha, joy of the Kuru line, at that time you gazed upon me with unblinking eyes. Then, at the concluding rite of that festival, in the august assembly of the dwellers of heaven, the gods—having received permission from your father (Indra)—departed, each to his own abode.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharmic decorum: even divine beings observe proper procedure—seeking and receiving the host-king’s permission before departing—showing that power is ideally governed by order, respect, and ritual propriety.

After the festival’s concluding rite (avabhṛtha) in the heavenly court, the assembled gods take leave of Indra (Arjuna’s father) and return to their respective celestial abodes.
