Arjuna’s Himalayan Departure and the Commencement of Severe Tapas

Janamejaya’s Inquiry; Sages Approach Śiva

prītyā ca te 'haṁ dāsyāmi yad astram anivāritam | tvaṁ hi śakto madīyaṁ tad astraṁ dhārayituṁ kṣaṇāt ||

Moved by affection for you, I shall grant you that irresistible weapon. For you are capable—indeed, in a moment—of bearing and wielding that weapon of mine. The gift is not merely power, but a trust: only one with proven discipline and worthiness may receive what cannot be checked once released.

Educational Q&A

Irresistible power is granted only with discernment: divine weapons symbolize authority that must be entrusted to one who has demonstrated discipline, devotion, and the capacity to restrain force within dharma.

Bhava (Śiva) declares that, pleased by the hero’s devotion and worthiness, he will bestow an unstoppable divine weapon and affirms that the recipient is immediately capable of bearing and wielding it.
