अर्जुनस्य इन्द्रकीलगमनम् तथा शक्रसाक्षात्कारः

Arjuna’s journey to Indrakīla and encounter with Indra

Janamejaya said: “O Brahmin, I have heard that in former times Arjuna—foremost among warriors and never defeated in battle—fought an exceedingly wondrous, unparalleled, hair-raising combat with Lord Śaṅkara. On hearing of it, even the heroic sons of Kuntī, the best of men, were seized with trembling born of dejection, joy, and astonishment. Tell me also all the other deeds that Arjuna performed.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights reverent inquiry into exemplary conduct: even the greatest human hero is measured against the divine, and the proper response is humble wonder and a desire to learn the full scope of virtuous and extraordinary deeds.

King Janamejaya, hearing of Arjuna’s astonishing combat with Śiva, asks the sage to narrate that event and to recount Arjuna’s other notable accomplishments as well.
