Vaiśaṃpāyana said: For the third month, he continued his austerity by taking food only once each fortnight. Then, when the fourth month arrived, that best of the Bharatas intensified his vow still further—advancing step by step in self-restraint and resolve, he moved toward living on air alone.

The verse highlights tapas as graduated self-restraint: discipline is intensified in stages, showing that ethical strength and spiritual purpose are supported by steady, deliberate practice rather than sudden excess.
The speaker describes a character’s escalating austerity: during the third month he eats only once per fortnight, and with the arrival of the fourth month he prepares to intensify the regimen further, underscoring determination in a vow.
