कामाल्लोभाच्च धर्मस्य प्रकृतिं यो न पश्यति । स वध्य: सर्वभूतानां प्रेत्य चेह च दुर्मति:,'राजन्‌! जैसे पक्षियोंको मारनेवाला व्याध इन पक्षियोंकों मारता है, यह विशेष प्रकारकी हिंसा ही अधर्मका स्वरूप है (अत: वह हिंसक सबके लिये वध्य है)। वैसे ही जो खोटी बुद्धिवाला मनुष्य काम और लोभके वशीभूत होकर धर्मके स्वरूपको नहीं जानता, वह इहलोक और परलोकमें भी सब प्राणियोंका वध्य होता है

kāmāllobhācca dharmasya prakṛtiṁ yo na paśyati | sa vadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ pretya ceha ca durmatiḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana said: The man who, driven by desire and greed, fails to perceive the true nature of dharma is regarded as punishable by all beings; and that evil-minded person meets condemnation and retribution both here in this world and after death. Such cruelty—like that of a hunter who kills birds—is a distinctive form of violence that stands as the very mark of adharma.
