Dharma-śaṅkā-nivāraṇa: Yudhiṣṭhira’s Response on Karma-Phala and Trust in Dharma

त्रिद्वारामर्थसिद्धि तु नानुपश्यन्ति ये नरा: । तथैवानर्थसिद्धिं च यथा लोकास्तथैव ते,अत: जो लोग अर्थसिद्धि तथा अनर्थकी प्राप्तिमें देव, हठ और स्वभाव--इन तीनोंको कारण नहीं समझते, वे वैसे ही हैं, जैसे कि साधारण अज्ञ लोग होते हैं

Transliteration

tridvārām arthasiddhiṁ tu nānupaśyanti ye narāḥ | tathaivānarthasiddhiṁ ca yathā lokās tathaiva te ||

Translation

Yudhiṣṭhira said: Those men who do not discern the threefold gateway by which success in worldly aims is attained—and likewise the threefold gateway by which misfortune is incurred—are no different from the unthinking multitude. They live as ordinary, ignorant people do, failing to recognize the true causes behind gain and loss.
