Draupadī’s Lament and Theodicy: Dharma, Dice, and Īśvara’s Governance (Āraṇyaka-parva 31)

Yudhiṣṭhira said: “He who seeks to ‘milk’ dharma for personal gain does not obtain the fruit of dharma. And the one who, out of disbelief, performs dharma yet harbors doubt about it—being of sinful intent—likewise fails to receive its true reward.”
युधिछिर उवाच
Dharma yields its true fruit only when practiced with sincerity and right intention; using dharma as a tool for selfish gain, or performing it while inwardly doubting it due to disbelief, blocks its moral and spiritual result.
In the Vana Parva dialogue context, Yudhiṣṭhira articulates a principle of ethical conduct: the efficacy of dharma depends not merely on outward performance but on inner faith and purity of motive.
