Educational Q&A

Wisdom and ethical intent are not confined to one’s birth or community: even a Rākṣasa can be portrayed as a sincere well-wisher who acts through proper channels to promote another’s welfare.

Mārkaṇḍeya introduces Avindhya, an elderly and intelligent Rākṣasa devoted to Rāma’s good, and explains that Avindhya has communicated a message through him to be delivered to the listener.
