Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “O Govinda, O all-pervading Lord! With you as our protector, we have crossed calamities that are otherwise impossible to surmount—just as people sinking in the vast ocean are carried across when they find a boat.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches śaraṇāgati (taking refuge): when one relies on the divine as nātha (protector), even seemingly un-crossable संकट (āpadaḥ) can be endured and overcome. The ethical emphasis is on humility, trust, and steadfastness rather than despair in adversity.

In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, the Pāṇḍavas (with Draupadī in the surrounding context) express gratitude to Kṛṣṇa, saying that his support enabled them to pass through grave dangers—illustrated by the image of drowning people saved by finding a boat in the ocean.
