Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve

Gandharva Encounter

trāsitaṃ vividhair bāṇaiḥ kṛtaṃ caiva parāṅmukham | tadanantaraṃ samastadevatābhiḥ asmin yuddhe dānavasenā vividhabāṇaprahāraiḥ bhayabhītā kṛtvā raṇabhūmeḥ vimukhīkṛtā ||

Markandeya said: Struck and harried by many kinds of arrows, the demon host was thrown into fear and forced to turn away. Thereafter, in that battle, all the gods, by their varied volleys, made the army of the Dānavas panic and retreat from the field—showing how unrighteous aggression collapses when confronted by disciplined, collective resistance in defense of cosmic order.

Educational Q&A

When forces aligned with dharma act together with discipline and resolve, adharma—though aggressive—tends to collapse into fear and retreat; moral order is upheld not only by power but by righteous purpose and unity.

Mārkaṇḍeya narrates a battle in which the gods shower the Dānavas with many kinds of arrows, terrifying them and forcing their army to turn away and withdraw from the battlefield.
