दानवैरर्दितं सैन्यं देवानां विमुखं बभौ । बहुत-से योद्धा, हाथी और घोड़े काट डाले गये। असंख्य आयुध और बड़े-बड़े रथ टूक-टूक कर दिये गये। इस प्रकार दानवोंद्वारा पीड़ित हुई देवताओंकी सेना युद्धसे विमुख हो गयी
dāna vair arditaṃ sainyaṃ devānāṃ vimukhaṃ babhau |
Mārkaṇḍeya said: “The army of the gods, harried and crushed by the Dānavas, turned away from the battle. Many warriors, elephants, and horses were cut down; countless weapons and even great chariots were shattered to pieces. Thus, under the demons’ assault, the devas’ host lost heart and withdrew—showing how fear and disorder can undo even a mighty force when steadfastness and right resolve fail.”
