Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve
Gandharva Encounter
नानाप्रहरणं घोरमदृश्यत महद् बलम् | तद् वै घोरमसंख्येयं गर्जच्च विविधा गिर:
nānāpraharaṇaṁ ghoraṁ adṛśyata mahad balam | tad vai ghoraṁ asaṅkhyeyaṁ garjacca vividhā giraḥ ||
A vast and dreadful host was seen, armed with many kinds of weapons. Indeed, it was terrifying and beyond counting, roaring with many different cries—an ominous surge of martial force.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse underscores the overwhelming, dehumanizing scale of armed conflict: when force becomes innumerable and weapon-laden, it naturally produces terror and suffering, reminding the listener that adharma often manifests as uncontrolled violence and intimidation.
Mārkaṇḍeya describes the sudden sight of a huge, fearsome army equipped with many weapons, accompanied by loud, varied roars and cries—an image that heightens tension and foreshadows imminent confrontation.
