Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve

“देव! तुम भगवान् शंकरके समान ही युद्धमें शत्रुओंके लिये अजेय हो। यह तुम्हारा प्रथम पराक्रम सर्वत्र विख्यात होगा। तुम्हारी अक्षय कीर्ति तीनों लोकोंमें फैल जायगी। महाबाहो! सब देवता तुम्हारे वशमें रहेंगे” ।। एवमुक्त्वा महासेनं निवृत्त: सह दैवतै: । अनुज्ञातो भगवता त्र्यम्बकेण शचीपति:
deva! tvaṃ bhagavān śaṅkarasya samāna eva yuddhe śatrūṇāṃ prati ajeyo bhaviṣyasi | eṣa tava prathamaḥ parākramaḥ sarvatra vikhyātaḥ bhaviṣyati | tava akṣayā kīrtiḥ trilokeṣu prasariṣyati | mahābāho! sarve devāḥ tava vaśe bhaviṣyanti || evam uktvā mahāsenaṃ nivṛttaḥ saha daivataiḥ | anujñāto bhagavatā tryambakeṇa śacīpatiḥ ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: “O divine one! In battle you will be as invincible to your enemies as the blessed Śaṅkara himself. This, your first great feat, will become renowned everywhere. Your imperishable fame will spread through the three worlds. O mighty-armed one, all the gods will come under your sway.” Having spoken thus, Śacī’s lord (Indra), together with the deities, withdrew from the great host, having received leave from the blessed Tryambaka (Śiva).
