Kṛtayuga Description and Instruction on Royal Dharma
tasya tāvacchatī sandhyā sandhyāṁśaś ca tataḥ param | trīṇi sahasrāṇi divya-varṣāṇi tretāyugam ucyate, tasya sandhyā-sandhyāṁśau api tulyau (trīṇi-trīṇi śatāni) divya-varṣāṇi; evaṁ sa yugaḥ ṣaṭ-triṁśat-śatāni divya-varṣāṇi bhavati |
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: The Tretā-yuga is said to last three thousand divine years. Its dawn (sandhyā) and its twilight (sandhyāṃśa) are each of equal measure—three hundred divine years apiece. Thus, together with its transitional periods, that yuga amounts to thirty-six hundred divine years.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse teaches a structured view of cosmic time: each yuga has a main span plus transitional periods (sandhyā and sandhyāṃśa), emphasizing that moral and cosmic orders are understood through measured cycles rather than random change.
Vaiśaṃpāyana is explaining yuga chronology, specifying the length of the Tretā-yuga and its two transitional intervals, as part of a broader account of cosmic ages and their measures.
