Mārkaṇḍeya said: “Having accomplished great deeds, you heroic men—ever devoted to austerity, self-restraint, and noble conduct—will duly satisfy the gods, the seers, and all the hosts of the departed with the highest prescribed rites. Thereafter, as the fruit of your righteous actions, you will in due course attain the supreme heaven, the abode of the virtuous. Therefore, O king of the Kurus, do not allow any doubt to arise in your mind on seeing your present hardship; this suffering is but a sign pointing toward your future happiness.”

Educational Q&A

Steadfast dharma—expressed as great deeds, austerity, self-restraint, and proper conduct—leads to the satisfaction of gods, sages, and ancestors through prescribed rites, and ultimately yields meritorious reward (svarga). Present suffering should not generate doubt; it can be a precursor to future well-being when one remains righteous.

Mārkaṇḍeya consoles the Kuru king (Yudhiṣṭhira) during the Pāṇḍavas’ forest hardship, predicting that their disciplined life and righteous actions will culminate in duly performed obligations toward divine and ancestral beings and will bring them, in time, to the highest heavenly state—thereby urging him to abandon anxiety and doubt.
