Bhīmasena’s Capture by the Serpent and Nahūṣa’s Self-Disclosure (भीमसेन-भुजङ्गग्रहणं नहुषोपाख्यानप्रस्तावः)
समाक्रान्ता मही पद्धयां समकम्पत सद्रुमा क्षुभिता: सरितश्वैव तथैव च महोदधि:,महातेजस्वी अर्जुन पहले तो विधिपूर्वक स्नान करके शुद्ध हुए। फिर न्रिनेत्रधारी भगवान् शंकर और इन्द्रको नमस्कार करके उन्होंने वह अत्यन्त तेजस्वी दिव्य कवच धारण किया। तत्पश्चात् वे पृथ्वीरूपी रथपर आरूढ़ हो बड़ी शोभा पाने लगे। पर्वत ही उस रथका कूबर था, दोनों पैर ही पहिये थे और सुन्दर बाँसोंका वन ही त्रिवेणु (रथके अंगविशेष)-का काम देता था। तदनन्तर महाबाहु कुन्तीनन्दन अर्जुनने एक हाथमें गाण्डीव धनुष और दूसरेमें देवदत्त शंख ले लिया। इस प्रकार वीरोचित वेशसे सुशोभित हो उन्होंने क्रमश: उन दिव्यास्त्रोंको दिखाना आरम्भ किया। जिस समय उन दिव्यास्त्रोंका प्रयोग प्रारम्भ होने जा रहा था, उसी समय अर्जुनके पैरोंसे दबी हुई पृथ्वी वृक्षोंसहित काँपने लगी। नदियों और समुद्रोंमें उफान आ गया
samākrāntā mahī padhyāṃ samakampata sadrumāḥ | kṣubhitāḥ saritaś caiva tathaiva ca mahodadhiḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: As Arjuna set his feet upon the earth, the ground trembled along with its trees; the rivers surged in agitation, and even the great ocean heaved likewise. The scene underscores the awe-inspiring, world-shaking potency of divinely sanctioned power when a disciplined hero is about to employ celestial weapons—power that must be governed by restraint and right purpose.
