Kubera’s Fivefold Nīti and Protection of the Pāṇḍavas (वैश्रवणोपदेशः)
sa samānīya tānū sarvān bhrātṝn ity abravīd vacaḥ | draupadyā sahitān kāle saṃsmaran bhrātaraṃ jayam ||
Having gathered all those brothers together, he addressed them. With Draupadī present, and at that moment recalling his victorious brother Arjuna—his dear kinsman—he spoke words meant to guide their course of action in accordance with duty and timely counsel.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights timely, duty-oriented counsel within a family setting: a leader gathers all stakeholders (the brothers, with Draupadī) and speaks after recollecting the exemplary strength and virtue of Arjuna, implying that right action is supported by remembrance of noble models and by deliberation at the proper time (kāla).
The speaker reports that one of the brothers convenes all his brothers together, with Draupadī present, and begins to address them while thinking of Arjuna—called ‘Jaya’, the victorious—setting up the next speech or decision in the episode.
