Devas and Viṣṇu on the Kāleyas; Approach to Agastya

kāleyānāṁ bhayena trastāḥ sākṣād indradevena sarva-śaktimān bhagavān nārāyaṇaḥ śīghratāpūrvakaṁ śaraṇaṁ prāptaḥ || taṁ śakraṁ kaśmalāviṣṭaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ | sva-tejo vyadadhāc chakre balam asya vivardhayan ||

Stricken with fear of the Kāleyas, Indra himself swiftly sought refuge in the all-powerful Lord Nārāyaṇa. Seeing Śakra overwhelmed by confusion and distress, the eternal Viṣṇu infused him with His own divine radiance, thereby strengthening Indra’s power.

Educational Q&A

Even the mightiest can be overcome by fear and kaśmala (inner confusion). The ethical remedy shown here is śaraṇāgati—turning to the highest refuge with humility—after which divine support restores inner clarity and the strength needed to uphold order.

Indra, frightened by the Kāleyas, approaches Nārāyaṇa for protection. Viṣṇu sees Indra in distress and infuses him with His own tejas, thereby increasing Indra’s power so he can face the threat.
