Vaiśampāyana said: The two great men, Karṇa and Duryodhana—both unable to bear affront and filled with smouldering resentment—sat together on a single seat, close by Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

The verse highlights how inner states—especially resentment and wounded pride (amarṣa)—shape outward political action. Even when seated near Kṛṣṇa, a figure associated with dharma and wise counsel, Karṇa and Duryodhana remain driven by intolerance of perceived insult, suggesting that proximity to wisdom does not help unless one is receptive. Ethically, it warns that anger and pride can solidify alliances that resist reconciliation and propel conflict.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Karṇa and Duryodhana sit together on a single seat near Śrī Kṛṣṇa. The detail underscores their close coordination and shared resolve at a tense moment in Udyoga Parva, where negotiations and counsel are pivotal and the parties’ dispositions foreshadow the coming war.
